So how do you build self-confidence? To build and maintain self-confidence, it is essential to be aware of the foundational principles underpinning it:
Self-Awareness: Be aware of yourself who you are and how you show up, essentially knowing yourself inside out. Identify you strengths, values, aspirations and also weaknesses. Being self-aware is the primary step to becoming confident.
Positive Self-Talk: A key area where we can sometimes fall down is the self-talk become very aware of how you speak to yourself, what you are saying challenge the negative self-talk and replace it with more uplifting and constructive thoughts through positive affirmations. Make this a daily habit to help you shape your self-perception.
Set Goals: Become very clear on what you want and break your goals down into manageable achievable steps, whenever you reach a target or a goal this will boost your confidence.
Preparation and Competence: When you set your goals become clear on what skills and knowledge you need to acquire to reach these goals, even in the preparation stages your confidence grows.
Resilience: The mindset that resilient people develop begins to see negatives and setbacks as opportunities to grow, and people who are resilient have confidence in their own abilities.
Physical and Mental Well-Being: To have the right mindset required to develop self-confidence it begins with self-care looking after your body and mind through exercise and engaging in activities which are enjoyable and stimulating. Having a healthy lifestyle has a positive impact on your confidence and self-esteem.

Visualise Success: Visualisation is the opportunity to see yourself achieving the goals you have set, or yourself being more confident in different social situations which can help to boost your confidence.
Affirmations: Have a bank of positive affirmations to hand, keep them in your phone or by your bedside and read them every morning. Make sure these affirmations are aligned with the change you want to see in your life or your goals. This can help develop your confidence as well as a positive self-image.
Celebrate Small Wins: When you begin to acknowledge and celebrate all of your wins even the smallest ones, this can reinforce your belief in your capabilities.
Seek Feedback: Feedback can be uncomfortable, but you can’t grow when you are comfortable, the development opportunities that come from feedback provides such an amazing opportunity for improvement. Tools such as 360 feedback or having conversations with your mentor or team. Learning from others is insightful and can provide the opportunity for growth.
Embrace Challenges: When you tackle challenges head on and you see the positive outcomes that you have achieved, this also fills the confidence cup.
Learn from Failure: Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and we know it’s unrealistic. However, we grow more through challenge and hard times, as we can reflect back and analyse what went well and what could have went better, be objective and identify what they key lessons were. This requires a mindset shift rather than thinking ‘I am such a failure’ rather thinking ‘I am so glad that I learned……’ which can help you develop confidence in your abilities.
Confidence-Building Activities: Think of what you enjoy doing in your spare time, or what you are good at and do more of that. When you see success in these areas, this helps to develop your overall self-confidence.
